Research at the Lung Health Foundation

Following a strategic pause to re-envision our research program, we are excited to share that this upcoming fall, we will once again be launching new funding opportunities for researchers, starting with our Emerging Scholar Research Award.  This initiative is rooted in our strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars, marking a significant investment in shaping the future of lung health research in Canada.

Current funding opportunities

2024/25 Better Breathing Rapid-Fire Thesis Competition – Calls open!


Objective:
To support professional development among graduate students conducting lung health research. This rapid-fire competition challenges student researchers to communicate a compelling story about the impact of their research project to an interdisciplinary audience — in just three minutes. If selected through this application process, the Lung Health Foundation will reimburse up to $1,300 CAD in travel expenses towards attending the Better Breathing Week conference, happening in-person January 24 and 25, 2025.

  • Sunday October 6, 2024 by 4:00 p.m. ET – Application deadline
  • Thursday October 31, 2024 by 4:00 p.m. ET – Notification of decision
  • Friday January 10, 2025 – Presentation slide submission deadline
  • Friday January 24, 2025 – Better Breathing Rapid-Fire Thesis Competition
  • Monday February 24, 2025 – Deadline for presenters to submit receipts for travel, accommodation, and in-transit meal expenses

Past funding opportunities

Research on First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis Lung Health

Through a partnership with the Canadians Institutes for Health Research, Canada’s federal funding agency for health research, the Lung Health Foundation is proud to announce $100,000 in funding for one impactful research project exploring one of the following:  

  • Prevalence and determinants of lung disease in Indigenous communities  
  • Environmental, social, and cultural factors influencing lung health disparities  
  • Culturally adapted interventions for prevention, management, and education  
  • Respiratory health promotion through Indigenous knowledge systems  
  • Examining structural barriers impacting Indigenous access to respiratory care

Recherche sur la santé pulmonaire des Premières Nations, des Inuits et/ou des Métis

Dans le cadre d’un partenariat avec les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, l’organisme du gouvernement du Canada chargé d’investir dans la recherche en santé, la Fondation pour la santé pulmonaire est fière d’annoncer un financement de 100 000 $ pour un projet de recherche percutant portant sur l’un des sujets suivants : 

  • Prévalence et déterminants des maladies pulmonaires dans les communautés autochtones; 
  • Facteurs environnementaux, sociaux et culturels influant sur les disparités en santé pulmonaire; 
  • Interventions de prévention, de prise en charge et de sensibilisation adaptées sur le plan culturel; 
  • Promotion de la santé respiratoire au moyen des systèmes de connaissances autochtones; 
  • Étude des barrières structurelles entravant l’accès des Autochtones aux soins respiratoires.

Hope Innovation Research Grants – Calls Open!

  • In honour of the generosity of Llyod Alexander Hope, the Lung Health Foundation (LHF) Hope Innovation Research Grant has been established to support innovative, transformative, ground-breaking research, and creative problem solving in lung health research.
  • The goal of the Hope Innovation Research Grant is to support novel, high-risk/high-reward, unconventional approaches or methodologies to address lung health issues related to LHF’s current topical areas of focus (Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer, Infectious Respiratory Disease/Immunization, Youth Smoking/Vaping prevention and cessation).

Improving the care and outcomes of residents of Canada living with metastatic NSCLC – Call closed

  • The Lung Health Foundation, Pfizer, Lung Cancer Canada, and the Quebec Lung Association are collaborating to provide funding to support projects focused on improving the care of outcomes of residents of Canada living with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with a special focus on addressing health inequities.  
  • Up to $100,000/project 
  • The estimated total available budget related to this grant opportunity is $200,000

Career Establishment Research Award – Call closed

  • Objective: To assist mid-career investigators with the operating support needed to carry out independent research of relevance to lung health.
  • Up to $75,000/project
  • 3 grants available

Better Breathing Student Travel Awards – Call closed

  • Objective: To promote research capacity among graduate students conducting lung health research. This award challenges student researchers to communicate a compelling story about the impact of their research to an interdisciplinary audience without using jargon in three (3) minutes. Award recipients will be funded to attend the Lung Health Foundation’s Better Breathing Week 2024 and participate in a thesis competition
  • Up to $1,300/project
  • 18 awards available

Emerging Scholar Research Award – Call closed 

  • Objective: To support promising investigators, early in their careers, with the operating support needed to carry out independent research of relevance to lung health.  
  • Up to $50,000/project
  • 4 grants available

Research at the Lung Health Foundation 

The Lung Health Foundation is currently redeveloping its research program to ensure alignment with a national focus and a new strategic plan.  

We feel it is important to take the time needed to engage with research stakeholders, healthcare professionals, people with lived experience and decision makers to fully:  

 

•Understand gaps in lung health research 

Expand the scope of the research program 

Develop sound program processes 

Develop a sustainable funding model, and 

•Ensure alignment with a national lung health agenda 

 

Over 2023, we will roll out funding opportunities to support our priority research areas in the respiratory field. They will be listed below as they become available.
